Debbie Silvester-Dean is recognised internationally for her world-leading research in the fields of gas sensing and electrochemistry, working on fundamental research that is delivering solutions to real world problems. Applications of her research include safer storage of hydrogen in vehicles and at refuelling stations; combatting pollution through wearable gas monitors; and screening for explosives to prevent terrorist incidents.

Debbie has published >95 peer-reviewed journal articles, generated >$5M of research income, presented >60 seminars (including Plenary/Keynote lectures) at leading national and international conferences. Her contributions have been recognised through several prestigious awards and medals, including the Le Fèvre Medal from the Australian Academy of Science in 2021. Debbie is a Fellow of both the Royal Australian Chemical Institute (RACI) and Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC).

She is currently one of the youngest Professors of Chemistry in Australia, a remarkable achievement considering she has taken two career breaks for maternity leave and has worked part time since 2013. Debbie enjoys photography, travel and hiking in the Perth hills with her family and friends.
