On the 1st February 2024, the Peter Cullen Trust welcomed its fourth Chief Executive Officer, Rosie Wheen.  Rosie succeeds Darryl Day, who has held the position for the past three years. Darryl commenced at the height of the Covid experience, helped us navigate that very difficult time and emerge with our business, our networks and our future in very good shape.

Rosie takes the tiller at the Trust following her successful time as CEO of WaterAid Australia (2016-2023) where she was widely recognised for her inspiring and transformative leadership of the high performing team.  An effective advocate for innovation, diversity and inclusion, Rosie’s appointment reflects the maturing of the Trust as an agent of change.

When asked about her vision for the next stage of the Trust’s development, Rosie shared that:

“We are living in a time of great uncertainty and change. We know how central water, environment and land management are to people and planet. Has there ever been a more important time for there to be a bridge between science, people and the environment, for courageous leadership?”

“I am excited to be joining the Trust, a community whose purpose is to foster courageous leadership to tackle these challenges. A community of leaders who embrace the Peter Cullen legacy of speaking with courage, saying what needs to be said and always with a way forward.”

I look forward to building on the strong foundations of the Trust, whilst working in collaboration with the Board, staff, Fellows, Friends and partners to shape the next phase for the Trust.”

From Day 1, Rosie’s approach will be to lead in a way that is true to her values and in service of the Trust’s ever more urgent mission. When reflecting on her potential legacy she aspires for it to be a time of transformation of the Trust, that is generative and builds on both the legacy of Peter Cullen and the impact of the Trust over the last 15 years. A transformation that results in the Trust having played its part in calling on and nurturing courageous leadership to tackle big challenges in water and environment.

Outgoing CEO, Darryl Day, whose warmth, humility and leadership has generated a culture of kindness and optimism, will be missed – but he promises to not go far!  In stepping away from the CEO role, Darryl will make space for the many other calls on his time and his expertise, including continuing as an active member of the Trust’s 15th Anniversary Boat House Dinner Organising Committee (read more about this milestone event in the February edition of Bridging, out next week).  We can also expect to see Darryl at Singapore International Water Week (18-24 June 2024) as Co-Chair of the Water Convention Technical Programme Committee, and in the Territory as Chair of the Community Reference Group for the Darwin Region Water Supply Infrastructure Program. Rosie invites Fellows, Friends, partners, sponsors and anyone with an interest in the work of the Trust to connect with her via Email: ceo@petercullentrust.com.au  and LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/rosie-wheen-15402336/
